Ambassador Chicago, part of JdV by Hyatt Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Ambassador Chicago, part of JdV by Hyatt, you immediately get that “this place has stories” feeling. The building itself dates back to 1926, and honestly, they’ve done a beautiful job preserving that old-school elegance while making everything feel fresh and current. The lobby has this warm, residential vibe — more like stepping into a well-appointed friend’s place than a typical hotel. You know what I mean? It’s that perfect balance where you feel sophisticated but not intimidated.
The Gold Coast Advantage
The location on North State Parkway is actually brilliant, and I think that’s why couples rate it so highly. You’re right in the heart of the Gold Coast — one of Chicago’s most walkable and genuinely charming neighborhoods. Lincoln Park Zoo is literally a few blocks north, which sounds random but trust me, it’s lovely for morning walks. The lakefront trail is close enough that you can easily jog or bike along Lake Michigan, and you’re walking distance to some of the city’s best shopping on Michigan Avenue. But here’s the thing — you’re tucked away on a quieter residential street, so you get all the benefits without the constant noise.
The Room Experience
The rooms feel more like boutique apartment living than standard hotel accommodations. I stayed in one of their corner units, and the windows — well, they’re generous. Natural light pours in, and if you’re lucky enough to get a lake view, the sunrises are pretty spectacular. The design leans contemporary but not cold, with warm wood tones and comfortable seating areas. The beds are solid (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have that satisfying weight to the fixtures that suggests quality without being flashy about it.
Dining and Daily Rhythms
The on-site restaurant, Corner, serves American cuisine that actually feels thoughtful rather than generic hotel food. Their breakfast is particularly good — I mean, you can definitely find cheaper options in the neighborhood, but there’s something nice about not having to venture out when you’re still figuring out your day. The coffee is solid, and they do this ricotta pancake thing that’s become sort of their signature. Evening wise, the bar area gets a nice mix of hotel guests and locals, which always feels like a good sign to me.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star property works because it feels authentic to Chicago rather than like it could be anywhere. The staff genuinely seems to know the neighborhood — they’ll send you to the good coffee shop three blocks over or tell you which entrance to use for the beach. Parking is available (which, let’s be honest, is a relief in this part of the city), and the whole operation just feels well-run without being stuffy. It’s the kind of place where you can dress up for dinner or wander down in jeans, and either feels perfectly appropriate. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about the tree-lined streets and the proximity to both urban energy and lakefront calm.

Loved that I got a corner room. Sometimes I feel claustrophobic in hotel rooms. Also liked that I could control the room temperature. Room was very quiet. I slept like I was at home.
