Getaway in the Heart of Pilsen Chicago Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Getaway in the Heart of Pilsen Chicago, you immediately sense you’re in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. This three-star property sits right in the thick of things on West 17th Street, where colorful murals cover building walls and the scent of authentic Mexican food drifts from nearby taquerias. The building itself has that classic Chicago charm — nothing flashy, but solid and welcoming in a way that feels genuinely local rather than touristy.

The Pilsen Experience

Honestly, the location here is what makes this place special. Pilsen has become one of Chicago’s coolest neighborhoods, and staying at Getaway in the Heart of Pilsen Chicago puts you right where the action is. You can walk to the National Museum of Mexican Art in about five minutes, and there’s this incredible street art scene that you’ll stumble upon just wandering around. The Pink Line stop is close enough that getting downtown takes maybe 15 minutes, but you know what? You might find yourself wanting to stick around the neighborhood instead.

The Accommodations

The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained — nothing over the top, but they’ve got everything you actually need. I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything like that, but the beds are solid, the Wi-Fi works reliably, and there’s decent space to spread out your stuff. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays despite being in such a lively area. The windows do a good job keeping street noise to a minimum, which matters when you’re trying to sleep after a long day exploring the city.

Local Flavors and Culture

This is where staying in Pilsen really pays off — the food scene around here is incredible. There’s Nuevo León just a few blocks away (locals swear by their carnitas), and honestly, you’ll find better Mexican food within walking distance than in most of downtown Chicago. The neighborhood has this authentic feel that a lot of other areas have lost, partly because it’s still primarily a Latino community. During the day, you’ll hear as much Spanish as English on the streets, and there’s something really genuine about that experience.

Why Guests Love It

Couples particularly seem to connect with this place — there’s something romantic about exploring a neighborhood that feels like a discovery rather than a typical tourist destination. The rating speaks for itself, and I think it’s because people come here expecting a basic place to crash and end up falling in love with the whole Pilsen experience. You’re getting authentic Chicago culture, great food, easy transit access, and a comfortable base to return to each night. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, which actually makes it more appealing than a lot of fancier places that feel generic.

Chicago’s apartments welcome families with kid-friendly museums, lakefront playgrounds, and easy train trips to zoos.

The place is located in a nice Mexican-American neighborhood full of colorful murals that we really enjoyed. There are several restaurants, grocery stores, a charming Mexican bakery, and a (free) Museum of Mexican Art, all within walking distance. The trip to the center took some 30 minutes by bus or train, which was OK for such a big city.

The apartment itself was nice and spacious. Big TV, comfy sofa, beds and pillows. The kitchen was equipped with most essentials, pans, pots, even a toaster, a blender, and a french press, but lacked a little in glassware. The bedroom was generally quiet except for the occasional hum or the sound of a siren. The washing machine was located in a shared laundry room in the basement and was coin-operated as is pretty common in the US.

Self check-in and check-out were smooth. The number of guests and ID had to be provided in advance. Communication with the host was to the point. He was friendly and promptly responded to any issues we had.

All in all, we had a pleasant stay.

Living area is nice with nice artwork. Nice big TV. Nice easy keypad for access. Direct street is quite run down but 18th street with all the bars and cafes is cool. Very close to pink CTA station.
