The Palmer House Hilton Overview
First Impressions
Walking into The Palmer House Hilton honestly feels like stepping back in time — but in the best possible way. This four-star hotel has been anchoring the corner of Monroe and State since 1871, and you can feel that history the moment you enter the lobby. The ceiling frescoes are absolutely stunning, and I mean, where else are you going to find hand-painted artwork like this in a hotel lobby? It’s grand without being stuffy, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to impress someone (couples seem to get this — they rate it really highly for romantic getaways).
Right in the Heart of Everything
The location is honestly unbeatable if you want to be in the thick of Chicago’s action. You’re literally in the Loop, which means Millennium Park is a five-minute walk, and you can catch the L at any number of nearby stations. State Street shopping is right outside your door — I actually watched people duck into Macy’s during a sudden downpour from the hotel’s windows. The Art Institute is close enough that you could pop over for a quick visit between meetings, and honestly, being this central means you’ll save a fortune on rideshares.
The Rooms
The room I stayed in had this perfect blend of classic elegance and modern comfort that’s hard to pull off. The beds are genuinely comfortable (and trust me, I’m picky about mattresses), and the windows offer great views of either the bustling street life or the Chicago River, depending on which side you’re on. What I really appreciated was the attention to detail — good lighting for actually getting work done, plenty of outlets, and a bathroom that doesn’t make you feel like you’re playing Tetris every time you need to move around.
Dining and Amenities
Lockwood restaurant downstairs serves solid American fare, and their breakfast is actually worth getting up for — which, you know, isn’t always the case with hotel restaurants. The fitness center is well-equipped enough that you won’t feel guilty about skipping your usual workout routine, and there’s a business center that’s actually useful if you need to print boarding passes or handle last-minute work stuff. Parking is available, though honestly, you probably won’t need a car given how walkable everything is from here.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both historic and current at the same time. You’re staying in a piece of Chicago history, but you’re not sacrificing modern conveniences to do it. The staff genuinely knows the city well — they’ll give you restaurant recommendations that aren’t just the obvious tourist spots, and they understand that sometimes you need directions to the nearest CVS at 10 PM. It’s the kind of place where business travelers feel comfortable, couples find it romantic, and families don’t feel out of place. Plus, you really can’t beat being this close to everything Chicago has to offer.
Chicago’s apartments welcome families with kid-friendly museums, lakefront playgrounds, and easy train trips to zoos.

Great location in a historic building. The staff were helpful and very friendly. We were offered an upgrade and took it. The room was very comfortable, generous in size, clean and had two bathrooms which made getting ready in the morning very efficient.

When a plumbing issue occurred in my room the staff was right on it, and offered me a much larger room with a view over the city, which I thought was generous of them.
