The Avondale Guesthouse Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Avondale Guesthouse on North Elston Avenue, you immediately get the sense that this isn’t your typical chain hotel — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. This three-star guesthouse sits in one of Chicago’s most genuinely local neighborhoods, where you’ll actually see residents walking their dogs and grabbing coffee at corner spots rather than just tourists with cameras. The building itself has that classic Chicago charm without trying too hard, and there’s something refreshing about a place that feels more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s house than a sterile hotel.
The Neighborhood Feel
What I love about this location is how it puts you right in the heart of Avondale — a neighborhood that locals know but tourists often miss. You’re close enough to Logan Square’s buzzing restaurant scene that you can walk there in about fifteen minutes, but far enough away that you won’t deal with the weekend crowds and noise. The area around the guesthouse has this perfect mix of family-owned Mexican restaurants, craft beer spots, and those little shops that make Chicago neighborhoods feel authentic. Plus, you know what’s actually convenient? The free parking — and I mean, anyone who’s tried to park in Chicago knows that’s basically like finding gold.
Your Stay Experience
The room I stayed in was thoughtfully designed without being fussy — clean lines, comfortable bedding, and those little touches that show someone actually cares about the guest experience. The guesthouse manages to feel both cozy and professional, which isn’t always easy to pull off. What struck me most was how quiet it was at night, despite being on a fairly busy street — the windows must be well-insulated because I slept better here than I do at some much pricier downtown hotels. The whole place has this relaxed vibe that makes you want to slow down a bit, maybe grab a book and actually use that reading chair by the window.
Getting Around
Here’s something that matters if you’re planning to explore the city — the Blue Line is close enough that you can get downtown in about twenty minutes, but you’re not dealing with the constant rumble of the L trains that you get in some neighborhoods. I found myself walking more than I expected because there’s actually stuff to see and do right around here. The 606 elevated trail is just a short walk away, and if you’re into that whole “experience the city like a local” thing, this area delivers without feeling forced or touristy.
Why Guests Love It
With a 9.3 rating, it’s clear that other travelers are picking up on what makes this place work so well. Couples especially seem to appreciate the location — and I get it, there’s something romantic about discovering a neighborhood together rather than just hitting the obvious tourist spots. The staff genuinely seems to care about making sure you have a good stay, and they’re full of recommendations that go beyond the typical “go see Millennium Park” suggestions. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself planning your next Chicago trip before you’ve even checked out.
Hotels in Chicago tower above riverwalks, jazz lounges, and deep-dish diners.

We came to town from Virginia for our sons wedding! This house was a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk to his house. It was comfortable and clean! We loved the outdoor space! It was a good location for our needs!

Great place. It's like staying at a friend's house. Lots of little extra things, plenty of towels, pillows, blankets, a stereo, tvs in the rooms, dishes, kuerig and traditional coffee maker etc.. The attention to the small creature comforts make it very comfortable and home-like. Also parking is very easy and the deck is great for visiting.

Loved the location, loved having someone pick me up from the airport, loved the cute kitchen and deck outside…. I would definitely rent again. The hosts were great telling us what there is to do around the surrounding area. The beds were comfortable.
