Thompson Chicago, by Hyatt Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Thompson Chicago, by Hyatt feels like stepping into someone’s really well-designed urban loft — if that someone happened to have impeccable taste and a serious budget. The lobby hits that sweet spot between sophisticated and approachable, which honestly isn’t easy to pull off in Chicago‘s competitive hotel scene. This four-star property sits right on East Bellevue Place, and I mean right in the thick of things — you’re basically in Gold Coast territory here, which locals will tell you is prime real estate.
The Location Advantage
Here’s what I love about this spot — you’re a quick walk to Michigan Avenue’s shopping madness, but you’re not actually on Michigan Avenue dealing with all that tourist chaos. The Magnificent Mile is right there when you want it, but you can also duck into quieter streets lined with historic brownstones and local cafes. Oak Street Beach is maybe a ten-minute stroll, which surprised me the first time I stayed here. You know what’s really convenient? The Red Line stop at Chicago/State is close enough that you don’t need to rely on rideshares to get around the city.
The Room Experience
The rooms here actually live up to the hype about comfortable beds — and trust me, I’m picky about sleep quality when I travel. The design leans modern without being cold, with floor-to-ceiling windows that give you solid city views (though honestly, which direction you’re facing makes a big difference). Each room has this clean, uncluttered vibe that feels more like a high-end apartment than a typical hotel space. The bathrooms are well-appointed too, with rainfall showers that actually have decent water pressure.
Dining and Social Spaces
The rooftop scene here is something else — Nico Osteria, their restaurant, serves up Italian-inspired dishes that go way beyond typical hotel food. I mean, the seafood-focused menu actually makes sense given Chicago’s location on the lake. The rooftop bar gets busy on weekends (especially in summer), but the views of the city and lake are worth dealing with crowds. There’s also a more casual lobby-level spot if you want something low-key, though I’d recommend heading upstairs for the full experience.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it balances being in the center of everything without feeling like a tourist trap. The staff seems to genuinely know the neighborhood — they’ll point you toward that little gelato place on Rush Street or tell you which nights the rooftop gets too crowded. Parking is available on-site, which honestly saves you a headache in this part of town where street parking is basically mythical. Couples especially seem to love the combination of the sophisticated atmosphere and the walkable location — there’s something romantic about strolling through Gold Coast in the evening, then coming back to a place that feels like your own stylish retreat.
